Benzoyl peroxide is a highly lipophilic, oxidising agent with keratolytic and bacteriocidal effects. The effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne vulgaris is primarily attributable to its antibacterial activity, especially with respect to Propionibacterium acnes.
