Indication for Teriparatide

Population group: only adults (18 years old or older)

Teriparatide is indicated for treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at increased risk of fracture. In postmenopausal women, a significant reduction in the incidence of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures but not hip fractures has been demonstrated.

Treatment of osteoporosis associated with sustained systemic glucocorticoid therapy in women and men at increased risk for fracture.

Detailed description

The recommended dose is 20 micrograms administered once daily.

The maximum total duration of treatment with teriparatide should be 24 months. The 24-month course of teriparatide should not be repeated over a patient’s lifetime.

Patients should receive supplemental calcium and vitamin D supplements if dietary intake is inadequate.

Following cessation of teriparatide therapy, patients may be continued on other osteoporosis therapies.

Dosage considerations

Should be administered once daily by subcutaneous injection in the thigh or abdomen.

Teriparatide (rhPTH(1-34)) is the active fragment (1-34) of endogenous human parathyroid hormone. Teriparatide is a bone formation agent to treat osteoporosis. The skeletal effects of teriparatide depend upon the pattern of systemic exposure.
