Zidovudine chemoprophylaxis is indicated for primary prophylaxis of HIV infection in newborn infants.

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

2 mg/kg bodyweight every 6 hours

For:

Dosage regimens

Oral, 2 milligrams zidovudine per kilogram of body weight, once every 6 hours, over the duration of 6 weeks.

Detailed description

Neonates should be given 2 mg/kg bodyweight orally every 6 hours starting within 12 hours after birth and continuing until 6 weeks-old.

1.5 mg/kg bodyweight every 6 hours

Intravenous, 1.5 milligrams zidovudine per kilogram of body weight, once every 6 hours.

Detailed description

Infants unable to receive oral dosing should be given zidovudine intravenously at 1.5 mg/kg bodyweight infused over 30 minutes every 6 hours.
