Indication for Atazanavir

Population group: only children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old)

Atazanavir, co-administered with low dose ritonavir, is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infected adults and paediatric patients 6 years of age and older in combination with other antiretroviral medicinal products.

200-300 mg once with ritonavir 100 mg daily

Detailed description

The dose of atazanavir capsules for paediatric patients is based on body weight as shown in the following table and should not exceed the recommended adult dose. Atazanavir capsules must be taken with ritonavir and have to be taken with food.

Dose for paediatric patients (6 years to less than 18 years of age and weighing at least 15 kg) for atazanavir capsules with ritonavir:

Atazanavir is an azapeptide HIV-1 protease inhibitor (PI). The compound selectively inhibits the virus-specific processing of viral Gag-Pol proteins in HIV-1 infected cells, thus preventing formation of mature virions and infection of other cells.
