Oral, between 60 milligrams dihydrocodeine and 120 milligrams dihydrocodeine, once every 12 hours.

Detailed description

Dihydrocodeine should be taken at twelve-hourly intervals at a dose of 60-120 mg twice daily depending on the severity of the patient’s pain. The maximum recommended dose is 240 mg daily since higher doses do not provide any further analgesic effect.

Elderly

Dihydrocodeine should be administered initially at the lowest dose possible in elderly.

Prior to starting treatment with opioids, a discussion should be held with patients to put in place a strategy for ending treatment with dihydrocodeine in order to minimise the risk of addiction and drug withdrawal syndrome.
