Indication for Tetracycline

Population group: only adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 years old or older)
Therapeutic intent: Curative procedure

For this indication, competent medicine agencies globally authorize below treatments:

250 mg 4 times daily, 500 mg twice daily or 4 times daily for 10 days

For:

Dosage regimens

Regimen A: Oral, 250 milligrams tetracycline, once every 6 hours, over the duration of 10 days.

Regimen B: Oral, 500 milligrams tetracycline, once every 6 hours, over the duration of 10 days.

Regimen C: Oral, 500 milligrams tetracycline, once every 12 hours, over the duration of 10 days.

Detailed description

Usual daily dose, 1 gram as 500 mg twice a day or 250 mg four times a day. Higher doses such as 500 mg four times a day may be required for severe infections or for those infections which do not respond to the smaller doses.

Tetracycline should be administered for at least 10 days.

Elderly

Usual adult dose. Caution should be observed as subclinical renal insufficiency may lead to drug accumulation.

Dosage considerations

Tetracycline should be given one hour before or two hours after meals, since food and some dairy products interfere with absorption.

Tetracyclines are taken up into sensitive bacterial cells by an active transport process. Once within the cell they bind reversibly to the 30S subunit of the ribosome, preventing the binding of aminoacyl transfer RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis and hence cell growth.
