Duration of treatment

The attending physician determines the duration of use. An acute episode generally subsides after 6 to 8 weeks. The rectal foam should not be used after this period of time.

Dosage considerations

Budesonide rectal foam can be applied in the morning or evening.

The best results are obtained when the intestine is evacuated prior to administration of the rectal foam.

Detailed description

Budesonide is indicated in adults for induction of remission in patients with mild to moderate active ulcerative colitis (UC) where 5-ASA treatment is not sufficient.

The recommended daily dose for induction of remission is 9 mg in the morning, for up to 8 weeks. When treatment is discontinued, it may be useful to gradually reduce the dose.

Elderly

No special dose adjustment is recommended. However, experience of the use of budesonide in the elderly is limited.
