Dicobalt edetate

Pharmacodynamic properties

Cyanide blocks intracellular respiration by binding to cytochrome oxidase. Dicobalt edetate forms a stable complex with the cyanide thereby acting as an antidote.

Pharmacokinetic properties

Only very limited data are available. Intravenous infusion of dicobalt edetate is likely to result in rapid distribution in the extracellular fluid compartment. Excretion is entirely via the kidneys within 24 hours and it is not metabolised.
