Hydrotalcite

Chemical formula: Mg₆Al₂(CO₃)(OH)₁₆ * 4H₂O  Molecular mass: 619.973 g/mol

Interactions

Hydrotalcite interacts in the following cases:

Tetracyclines, quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, formulations containing iron, digoxin

Hydrotalcite may affect the absorption of certain drugs, e.g. tetracyclines, quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, formulations containing iron, digoxin. Therefore, a period of 1 to 2 hours should be allowed between the administration of hydrotalcite and other medicines.

Chenodeoxycholic acid, cimetidine, coumarin derivatives, anticholinergics, isoniazid, carbenoxolone, phenobarbital

Hydrotalcite may affect the absorption of certain drugs, e.g. chenodeoxycholic acid, cimetidine, coumarin derivatives, anticholinergics, isoniazid, carbenoxolone, phenobarbital. Therefore, a period of 1 to 2 hours should be allowed between the administration of hydrotalcite and other medicines.

Alzheimer's disease, dementia

Long-term treatment and high dose administration should be avoided in patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Acidic food

Hydrotalcite should not be taken with acidic foods / drinks (fruit juices, wine, etc.), because it increases the absorption of aluminum hydroxide from the intestine.
