Pefloxacin

Chemical formula: C₁₇H₂₀FN₃O₃  Molecular mass: 333.357 g/mol  PubChem compound: 51081

Interactions

Pefloxacin interacts in the following cases:

Interaction

Hepatic insufficiency

Pregnancy

There are limited amount of data from the use of pefloxacin in pregnant women. Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to reproductive toxicity.

Joint damages have been observed in children treated with quinolones, but no case of joint disease secondary to in utero exposure has been reported.

As a precautionary measure, it is preferable to avoid the use of pefloxacin during pregnancy.

Nursing mothers

Pefloxacin is excreted in breast milk at high level (75% of the serum concentration). Due to the potential risk of articular damage, breast feeding should be discontinued during pefloxacin treatment.

Carcinogenesis, mutagenesis and fertility

Fertility

At supratherapeutic doses, pefloxacin, orally administered, causes spermatogenesis impairment in rats and dogs. However, the absence of effects on reproductive performance (mating and fertility) was noted in rats. There is no available data on human fertility.

Effects on ability to drive and use machines
