Therapeutic indications

Zidovudine is indicated for:

Human immunodeficiency virus infection

Population group: only children (1 year - 12 years old) , adolescents (12 years - 18 years old) , adults (18 - 65 years old)

Zidovudine is indicated in anti-retroviral combination therapy for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected adults and children.

Chemoprophylaxis in HIV-positive pregnant women

Population group: women, only adults (18 - 65 years old)

Zidovudine chemoprophylaxis is indicated for use in HIV-positive pregnant women (over 14 weeks of gestation) for prevention of maternal-foetal HIV transmission and for primary prophylaxis of HIV infection in newborn infants.

Contraindications

Zidovudine is contraindicated in the following cases:

Abnormally low neutrophil counts or haemoglobin levels

at least one of
Neutropenia
Hemoglobin low

Newborn infants with hyperbilirubinaemia or with increased transaminase levels

at least one of
Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia
Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase level raised
Alanine aminotransferase above reference range
